High-ranking officials from Türkiye, including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and Chief of General Staff Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, are visiting Riyadh to participate in a pivotal meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee of the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance. This gathering occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement in Yemen, highlighting the alliance’s importance in regional security.

Established in August 2026 by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance aims to bolster joint defense capabilities and enhance regional cooperation. The current meeting is expected to address various security challenges, with Fidan anticipated to reaffirm Türkiye’s commitment to Saudi Arabia and discuss threats, including attacks on Saudi territory and the protection of sacred sites and civilian infrastructure.

A significant focus of the discussions will be the alliance’s institutional growth, with plans to set up a permanent secretariat in Riyadh and a military headquarters. The assignment of personnel is expected once the necessary preparations are finalized, marking a strategic development in the alliance’s framework.

The meeting will also explore the alliance’s future structure, regional security threats, and the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation on international trade routes. Additionally, efforts to resolve conflicts peacefully will be a key topic, aligning with the alliance’s goal to foster a cooperative regional defense framework rather than forming an opposing bloc to external powers.

Türkiye has indicated that the alliance could potentially expand to include other regional members, suggesting a broader vision for cooperative defense efforts in the region. This strategic dialogue in Riyadh underscores the alliance’s role in addressing security concerns and promoting stability in the Middle East.
