Despite these efforts, Turkish Cypriot authorities have expressed skepticism about the EU’s impartiality in the matter. They argue that the EU cannot be a neutral mediator since the Republic of Cyprus is already a member of the bloc. Criticism was also leveled at the EU for appointing a new envoy to Cyprus without consulting the Turkish Cypriot community, a move that has stirred concerns about the fairness of the process.
The European Commission has outlined that its special representative will focus on fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, with the aim of reviving negotiations within the UN framework. EU officials have reiterated their dedication to supporting initiatives that could lead to a durable settlement of the conflict.
The Cyprus issue has been a long-standing conflict, with peace negotiations hitting a stalemate since 2017. Turkish Cypriot leaders maintain that any future talks should acknowledge their sovereign equality and international status on par with the Greek Cypriots before any formal discussions can resume. The EU’s recent moves indicate a renewed push to break the deadlock and encourage dialogue between the parties involved.
