Erdoğan: Iran conflict impacts tech innovation, threatens global economic stability

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has highlighted the global repercussions of regional conflicts, emphasizing that no nation can remain unaffected by crises occurring elsewhere. Speaking in Ankara following a Cabinet meeting, Erdoğan addressed the widespread economic and political consequences stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran. He noted that the interconnected nature of today’s world means crises trigger inflation, disrupt supply chains, and unsettle energy markets worldwide.

Erdoğan illustrated the far-reaching impact of regional instability by saying, “When a country in the Middle East sneezes today, a country in Latin America or Asia can easily catch a cold.” He pointed to the ongoing instability following the February 28 attacks on Iran as a complex crisis influencing global stability. Key indicators of this fragility, he noted, include fluctuating fuel prices, escalating inflation, and persistent supply chain bottlenecks, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Turkish leader warned of the unpredictable damage from the economic shock waves, criticizing a system he believes is driven by speculation and market manipulation. Erdoğan accused a small group of capitalists of profiting from global turmoil, enhancing their wealth while middle- and lower-income families worldwide face increased living costs and reduced purchasing power. “Every war creates its own economy,” he said, arguing that the economic consequences of the Iran conflict have surpassed tolerable levels, threatening global economic well-being.

Domestically, Erdoğan condemned unjustified price hikes in Türkiye, suggesting that some pricing behaviors cannot be justified by production or transport costs, given the country’s competitive input costs, especially in energy. He assured that authorities would continue to monitor and curb opportunistic pricing, urging businesses to aid in maintaining market stability and protecting consumers.

Additionally, Erdoğan condemned Israel’s attacks, asserting that they would not deter the international community’s quest for justice and solidarity with Palestinians. He denounced Israel’s assault on the Global Sumud Flotilla as “piracy” and “banditry” against the “voyagers of hope,” which included citizens from 40 countries. Erdoğan’s remarks underscore his commitment to addressing both global and domestic challenges amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
