The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Türkiye are commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation amidst ongoing political tensions with the Greek Cypriot administration. The official ceremonies are taking place in Lefkoşa (Nicosia), with a high-level Turkish delegation, led by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, in attendance. As part of the commemoration, Türkiye has sent naval vessels for public visitation and plans to open a new maritime traffic monitoring center in Famagusta to enhance cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

This anniversary occurs against the backdrop of stalled negotiations over Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot leaders continue to push for a two-state solution grounded in sovereign equality. They also express frustration over the international community’s lack of recognition for the TRNC and accuse the Greek Cypriot authorities of heightening regional tensions through new military alliances.

Turkish Cypriot officials reinforce the importance of Türkiye’s role as a guarantor state, stating it is crucial for the island’s security. They argue that Türkiye’s involvement remains indispensable, especially given the absence of progress in peace negotiations.

The United Nations is anticipated to initiate fresh discussions later this month regarding the future of Cyprus peace talks. These discussions are seen as crucial in addressing the longstanding conflict and exploring potential pathways to a peaceful resolution.
