In the wake of the European Arctic Summit held in Rovaniemi, Finland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has voiced her optimism about finding a peaceful resolution to ongoing issues concerning Greenland and the broader Arctic region with the United States. Frederiksen acknowledged the mounting pressure Greenland has been facing and expressed gratitude for the support from European partners.
Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s intention to bolster cooperation with the United States, specifically focusing on security and defense matters that include Greenland. While a high-level working group is actively engaged in discussions centered on these issues, Frederiksen noted that it is premature to draw any conclusions but expressed hope for progress in the near future.
Highlighting the collaborative efforts, Frederiksen also pointed out the increasing cooperation among European and transatlantic partners concerning Arctic security. Several allied nations are currently conducting military exercises in Greenland, reflecting the growing involvement of European countries in safeguarding the region.
The European Arctic Summit, which took place on September 13-14, aimed to develop a unified European approach to the Arctic, a region that is gaining strategic and geopolitical significance. The summit’s focus was on reinforcing this common stance as the Arctic continues to attract global interest.
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been at the center of diplomatic tensions following repeated expressions of interest from former US President Donald Trump in bringing the territory under American control.
