Türkiye is poised to embark on a technically demanding oil-drilling venture in the western Black Sea as part of its broader initiative to bolster its domestic energy reserves. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has acknowledged the complexities of the operation, which is expected to be time-intensive. This effort is a segment of Türkiye’s ambitious plan to execute six exploratory wells across different sections of the Black Sea by 2026, encompassing the western, central, and eastern regions.
In recent years, Türkiye has significantly enhanced its offshore exploration capabilities, now boasting a fleet of six deep-water drilling vessels. These vessels are actively engaged in various exploration and development tasks within the Black Sea. This strategic expansion underlines Türkiye’s commitment to increasing its energy self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on imported resources.
By the end of this year, Türkiye aims to double its gas production from Black Sea fields, capitalizing on the estimated reserves of approximately 785 billion cubic meters discovered since 2020. Currently, the country produces around 9.5 million cubic meters of gas daily, which caters to the energy needs of about 4 million households. Looking ahead, the government anticipates that production could soar to 16–17 billion cubic meters annually by 2028, marking a significant step in its energy strategy.
Türkiye’s strategy to strengthen domestic production is complemented by its initiatives to expand LNG infrastructure and develop pipeline connections. The country is also exploring new routes that could facilitate the transport of gas from the Middle East to European markets, thereby enhancing its role as a pivotal energy transit hub in the region. Through these efforts, Türkiye seeks to solidify its position in the global energy sector while ensuring energy security and sustainability.
