Spotify is set to implement new strategies to identify and manage AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings created by AI will feature an “AI persona” tag. This initiative is designed to help users discern between genuine musicians and artificial identities, while also safeguarding real artists from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
In a bid to ensure transparency, Spotify plans to exclude AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. The platform will enable artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. Additionally, Spotify will employ a combination of human reviewers and AI tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas. This approach is part of the company’s efforts to maintain clarity as AI-produced music continues to proliferate rapidly.
The decision comes against the backdrop of an increasing influx of AI-generated music. Spotify previously reported that it removed 75 million spam tracks over a span of 12 months, underscoring the prevalence of artificial and subpar content infiltrating music streaming services.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, the demand for transparency grows. Spotify recognizes the importance of listeners being informed about whether a track is created by a real artist or an AI-generated persona. The company aims to address this concern by providing clear labeling and maintaining the integrity of its recommendation system.
