In a dramatic development, Türkiye’s political scene has experienced a significant transformation following the resignation of 91 lawmakers from the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Led by former CHP leader Özgür Özel, these lawmakers have joined forces to establish a new political entity named the New Party (Yeni Parti). This exodus represents the largest rift in the CHP’s contemporary history and alters the dynamics within the Turkish Parliament. With the New Party now being the largest opposition group, the CHP’s representation has dwindled from 135 seats to just 44, thereby losing its status as the main opposition party.
Özgür Özel took a definitive step in launching the New Party on Friday by signing the foundational documents, which have been submitted to the Interior Ministry for official registration. The 91 defectors from the CHP are now members of the party’s founding board. Addressing journalists in Ankara, Özel confirmed the completion of the party’s legal registration and announced the immediate commencement of forming its leadership structure. The party’s founding board is set to meet at the historic Anadolu Club, a venue established under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s guidance, to elect the party chairperson and its governing bodies.
Özel expressed his vision for the New Party to actively participate in the forthcoming parliamentary budget discussions as the principal opposition, albeit for the first and last time. He conveyed his belief that the movement would eventually lead a future government, aiming to prioritize economic prosperity and political stability. This parliamentary reshuffle is anticipated to alter the seating arrangements within the General Assembly and increase the number of parliamentary groups from six to seven.
The split from the CHP comes after a period of internal discord, which intensified following Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s return to party leadership, a move facilitated by a court ruling that overturned the previous party congress. In response to the creation of the New Party, CHP spokesperson Müslim Sarı questioned its necessity, pointing out that Özel had committed to adhering to the same political principles as the CHP. Sarı speculated that the formation of the new party might be driven more by political maneuvering than by substantial policy differences.
